Why set goals?
Why should we even bother to set goals, doesn't it take that element of surprise out of life and the fun of the unknown.
In fact we all do set goals whether we realize it or not. Everything we do is taking us towards getting what we want, even if what we want is not something we have given any thought to, or even written down on paper. Most of us don't have any clear goals as to what we want out of our lives for the next five years, and are content to just drift along getting what we are given, instead of getting exactly what we want, and we blame everyone else apart from themselves if what we get is something that we don't want or ask for.
You need to move into the driving seat and get behind the wheel to steer yourself and your life in the direction that you want to go in. You need to take the journey that will get you to the destination or your choice not someone else's. Being a back seat driver is not good enough if you want to get of life exactly what you want, you need to be the one at the wheel.
When you get clear about your goals and take action, you attract support, help and advice from all sorts of unexpected sources along the way.
Here is your guide to setting goals:
Keep your goals to yourself
It's most important to keep your goals confidential, keep them to
yourself, don't divulge what your ultimate dream is to anyone. Doing
this dilutes your goal and takes away some of the energy would
otherwise put into them. You lose a bit of your momentum if you talk
about your goals too much. If you have to share them, do it only
with someone who also shares your goal, and working with someone
with the same aim might make you succeed more quickly.
You might find that some people who know your goal will be jealous of what you are trying to do, so it might pay well to keep them to yourself.
Be excited
Your goals must be exciting to you otherwise you need have the drive
or hunger to achieve them. You will know they are exciting when you
get that boost of energy urging you towards them. You could find
yourself waking in the night with excitement, if so you have the
right goal. Your imagination is fuelled by exciting goals and you'll
come up with ever more exciting ideas and ways to complete your
goals.
Specific, measurable, realistic and timed
Your goal needs to be defined, you need to be totally sure what you
expect from the result of your goal, and you need to be able to
measure it, compare the completed goal to the starting point. They
also need to be realistic, you must have a chance of succeeding
otherwise they will be too hard and you will give up easy. They
mustn't be too easy either, as you will equally get bored. They must
also be timed, you need to set a date at which time they will be
completed, because you will have no focus and no urgency to get them
done, and eventually you will give up.
Get help
Surround yourself with the right people. Your success is largely
determined by the people around you with who you mostly associate
with. If you have the right people around you who are like minded
who will share the same opinions of success, you will have a much
greater chance of reaching your goal. If you surround yourself with
negative people, then it will be much harder to reach your target.
Write them down on paper
Once you have decided what your goals are, it is important to write
them down on paper. Don't use an electronic device or a word
processor, use a pen and piece of paper and clearly in big letters
write out your goals. Doing this will burn your goals into your
subconscious mind, and repeated on a daily basis, you will think of
nothing else but completing your goals.
