Thinking of getting a new job or a career change?

So you want to find a new job and you are not sure how or what job you want?

Your circumstances and your reason for a new job will have a major factor on your need for new employment. It's often said that people who are in work have a much better chance of succeeding in finding a job, than those who are out of work, so if you have a job now and you are considering a change of career, don't wait too long.

Of course if you are currently unemployed, don't panic, you still have almost as good a chance, in fact it might be greater, as you may have a bit more time to do the leg work.

Here are a few ideas you can consider when thinking of a change of career or if you are looking for your ideal job:-

Be imaginative
Think of your future self living your ideal life. What job would you be doing, what would your life be like? When you think about your ideal job, what jumps out at you, what would your dream job be?

You might imagine yourself managing a team, being a leader, working with young people, being creative or working for your local council.

Now considering your dream job, think of all the types of roles that might provide you with what you would like. You might be thinking about a job in an industry you have little or no experience in, but that needn't stop you getting the job you want.

Write a list out
Write a list out of all the jobs you would like to do and list them in order of preference. Once you have done this, look through the job sites to get an idea of which jobs are the best match for you.

Assess your special talents
What are you particularly good at or enjoy? Write a list of all the things you are good at and try to match that list with the same types of jobs.

Canvas companies
Once you have picked your best job, start contacting potential companies in your area. Write to them asking then if they have any vacancies. Many job vacancies are not advertised, and when they are, there are so many places to advertise them, it's not always easy to find them.

Sell yourself
Make sure you sell yourself and promote your best bits. Take time in updating you CV, ensuring it includes your broadest range of skills possible, as some skills will be easily transferable to different sectors of employment. When producing your CV, don't use more than two pages and make your best bits stand out in the middle of the first page.

Be confident
Be confident and completely expect, not hope, truly believe you will be offered the job you want. Lack of confidence and self-doubt could be your biggest stopping block of success. Repeat affirmations, "I always find the new job that is ideal for me".

Gain some experience
If you are currently out of work, of if you have the time in work, it might pay to take a temporary job or volunteer in a sector to build up some experience.

Be flexible
It's important to be flexible. You might have to go down your list to get the job you want and it may not be your first choice. Be prepared and adapt to fit your ideal job to what is available.

Be persistent
Persistence is the key, if at first you don't succeed try and try again. You might find that you don't get that dream job at first, but you must keep trying and keep at it, because you know deep down it will come. Remind yourself you can get that job, and you will get that job. Desire, discipline and persistence are the keys.

Long term goals
What are you long term goals. You are looking for your ideal job, but does it offer opportunities to grow into something bigger? We all want to expand, develop and grow and you may need to consider this.
